The product we have been referring to as OS/2 Warp LAN Client has been
named OS/2 Warp Connect. At the CeBit conference in Europe, the beta
for this version was announced. Following are associated Q's & A's.
Q. How is IBM testing Warp Connect?
A. IBM has been testing Warp Connect in an open but limited beta since
December 1994. On March 14, we plan to send the beta to a larger distribution.
Q. What is the makeup of the beta test group?
A. The beta will represent a wide range of users from individuals to large
corporations.
Q. What is the beta designed to test?
A. The beta is designed to test ease of use.
Q. How long will this beta last?
A. Deadlines in the beta test cycle are artificial. However, IBM anticipates
finishing the testing in time for a release in the spring.
Q. How will the separate, enterprise CD be delivered? Will it be part of the
beta?
A. We will announce how we will make that product available to enterprise
customers when we ship the product. It will not be part of the beta. All
components of this CD are existing IBM products.
Q. Will this product be available in fullpack and for Windows? Why is it being
beta tested in only fullpack?
A. It will be available in both versions. While the beta test and the first
release of the product will be in the "fullpack" version, it will be released
in a "for Windows" version shortly.
Q. Why are you announcing the beta at CeBIT?
A. CeBIT is the largest and possibly the most important international computer
trade show. OS/2 Warp is a worldwide phenomenon, and is selling particularly
well in Europe.
Q. Describe previous betas for this product.
A. An early beta was issued last December to a small group of testers. In
addition, the peer product has been tested separately.
Q. Why is this beta cycle so short?
A. Most of the product has been previously tested and sold separately,
including the base operating system. We are testing the integration of the
components.
Q. What is the estimated GA for Warp Connect?
A. We are planning general availability for the spring.
Q. Why is IBM developing a networking version of OS/2 Warp?
A. More than 50 percent of PCs sold today are attached to LANs. We are meeting
the demands of those customers by adding a vast array of networking features
to the most advanced 32-bit operating system on the market.
Q. Is Warp Connect a Windows 95 killer?
A. Windows 95 is not yet available. And it's hard to predict what the final
product will look like. While Microsoft struggles to deliver a 32-bit desktop
OS, we are moving forward, delivering against our plan for a complete family
of OS/2 Warp products that scale from the desktop to SMP machines.
Q. What is the target market for Warp Connect?
A. The target market for Warp Connect is anybody who has a need to share
information or access shared information. This can include any environment
from a small business or workgroup setting to a large corporation trying to
integrate information in a mixed environment.
Q. Will IBM ship a standalone peer product for OS/2, DOS, and Windows PCs?
A. There are currently no plans for such a product.
Q. Is there a royalty agreement with Microsoft involved with this product?
A. No.
Q. Will Warp Connect be compatible with Windows for Workgroups?
A. Yes.
Q. How will Warp Connect be shipped? CDs? Diskettes?
A. It will be available on CD ROM only with images for diskettes on the CDs.
Q. What are the memory requirements for the product?
A. IBM recommends 8 MB of memory for Warp Connect.
Q. How will the product be priced?
A. We will announce pricing when we ship.
Q. IBM has announced the availability of OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS/2 at about the
same time as the Warp Connect beta. Why should I buy the "fullpack" version?
A. The WIN-OS/2 version of OS/2 Warp is the upgrade path for OS/2 2.X users,
many of whom are in corporate settings where the network components are
already in place.
Q. Can Warp Connect be used as an application server?
A. Yes - it has the necessary network transport support to run applications
such as Lotus Notes, DB2/2, etc.
Q. Will IBM continue to sell Warp without networking features?
A. Yes. There is a substantial market for home users.
Q: What are the seven databases that will be available with Lotus Notes
Express?
A: Lotus Notes Express traditionally packaged five databases: discussion
databases, client/server mail, phone book, reference databases and news
databases. Warp Connect will include those and two additional databases:
customer tracking and service requester.
